On Friday, January 11, a press conference was held in the conference room of Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine to announce the establishment of MIJ labo, a venture company originating from Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.

Since 2015, the University and Meat Image Japan (Obihiro City) have been conducting joint research with the aim of promoting the development of agriculture in the Tokachi region and contributing to Hokkaido’s agricultural industry.

The results have included “market research in the livestock industry,” “meat quality evaluation technology using the latest image analysis technology,” “special cameras for photographing carcasses,” and a “carcass image database.” In order to make these results practical and useful in the livestock industry, and to contribute to the development of the livestock industry by providing the results of this analysis to people in various fields, we established the venture company “MIJ Labo Inc.” The University’s Department of Life and Food Science Professor Keigo Kuchida has been appointed as the company’s Director and Chief Development Officer.

Professor Kuchida has analyzed and researched tens of thousands of carcass image data taken in the Tokachi region, and thus obtained two patents: “Method for evaluating fatty crossbreeding in meat” and “Method for determining meat color grade.” MIJ labo, Inc. will conduct the business of photographing and analyzing carcasses by combining the “meat quality evaluation technology using the latest image analysis technology” based on these patents with Japan’s first “dedicated camera for photographing narrow incisions” developed by Professor Kuchida and Meat Image Japan, Inc. In addition, MIJ Labo plans to develop a business that makes full use of cloud technology and AI.

MIJ Labo Inc. will contribute to the development of the livestock industry in the Tokachi region and Hokkaido as a venture company originating from our university.
